//Physical Therapy - Physiotherapy & Amatsu
| |
What sort of physical therapy do you provide?The physical therapy I offer comes from my background as an HPC registered Physiotherapist and Practitioner (and former teacher) of Amatsu. I have also studied a number of other complementary therapies so now combine my skills and knowledge in a powerful and effective package that treats and re-balances the whole body. More often than not my clients come to me as a last resort. They have been to see a variety of other medical practitioners and therapists who do not seem to have been able to help resolve their problem. I'm the last person they need to see before they get better.

What is Amatsu?
Amatsu is a Japanese therapy that has been around for many thousands of years and treats the whole body rather than just the symptom. It works on the philosophy that everything within the body is connected and therefore you may find I am working on your feet when you have a neck problem.
Amatsu is a hands on therapy which involves touching and holding various parts of the body and fundamental elements include palpation (touch), mobilisation, massage and re-patterning.
One of the key principles of Amatsu is to always work with the body rather than against it. That means not forcing your muscles or joints in directions they don't want to go. If things are out of alignment they are that way for a reason. If I were to attempt to force them back to 'where they should be' without discovering and resolving the root cause of the problem they would simply end up back where they started and the pain and discomfort would continue.
"My headaches are finally a thing of the past. Thank you Stephen. I can't believe I put up with such pain and discomfort for so long ... and it didn't take much to sort out." E.P. - Bucks |
What do you treat?
If you have an ache, pain or ailment of some description, the chances are I've I had someone through my door with something similar at some point over the last 15 years and been able to help. Below is a list of some examples of the reasons people come to see me.
* Muscular or joint problems anywhere in the body including strains, sprains, neck pain, back pain and shoulder problems
* High/low blood pressure
* Arthritis and rheumatism
* Carpal tunnel syndrome
* Sciatica and trapped nerves
* Whiplash
* Sports injuries such as tennis and golfers elbow, groin strains
* Repetitive strain injuries (RSI)
* Respiratory complaints e.g. asthma, chronic coughs, nasal congestion, sinusitis
* Postural problems
* Bowel complaints e.g. IBS, colitis
* Digestive problems e.g. colic, heartburn
* Headaches, migraines
* Ante and post-natal problems
* Stress and tension
* Spinal curvature
* Ear/nose/throat problems
* Mobility problems
* New born babies
Particularly ventouse/forceps births. Making sure that the cranial bones are aligned properly can help prevent ear, nose and throat problems later in life. I worked on my daughter's head after a ventouse birth within 15 minutes of her being in the world. The doctor was rather surprised at how 'normal' her head shape was when he saw her a couple of days later.
"Thank you so much for treating James (8 weeks). As an anxious first time mother I didn't know if his seemingly constant screaming and crying was normal, but I'm glad I asked if you could help. We all had our first full night's sleep the day we saw you. Heaven. Who'd have thought just once session could ease his distress and stop the screaming." L.F. - Bucks |
What can I expect from a session?
A session in Amatsu is called a 'balance' as the philosophy and intent behind every treatment is to bring balance to the body.
The first session will always be an hour to give us time to discuss your medical history as well as work with your body. The majority of the time you will be fully clothed, although when massage is the most suitable solution for your problem you may be asked to remove some items of clothing to make the treatment easier.
As you will be lying down, either face up or down depending on what is required, your job is to relax and let me work with your body to help it get back to good health and working order.
Sometimes treatment is like peeling an onion, depending on whether you have an acute (an immediate and sudden pain) or chronic (on going for some time) problem. As a result of an incident or accident the body may compensate in a variety of ways in order to protect itself from further damage. Left untreated it is often the symptoms of the compensation that brings someone to my door. It is my job to peel back the layers until we discover the real underlying issue so we can restore the body to full health and well being.
"I'd love to know how the hell the neurologist couldn't find the problem with my head and neck but you managed to help with fairly immediate results!" J.S. - Herts |
How will I feel after the treatment?
The varies from person to person. Sometimes people feel energised, others feel sleepy and relaxed, and it could be different after each session. The most important thing to remember is to drink plenty of water to help flush the toxins out of your body. If I think there is anything you can be doing (or avoiding) between treatments in order to help enhance your recovery I will dicuss it with you during the session.
"I just had to write to say thank you so much for sorting out my knee problem and helping me to have movement again. I can even go for walks with my grandchildren to the park again. Wonderful. I feel as though I've been given a new lease of life. Thank you Stephen." K.P. - Kent |
How many sessions will I need?
That is not something I am able to tell you without looking at you first. Even then it would be difficult to estimate as every body is different, responds differently to treatment and heals at a different pace. To a degree it also depends on your lifestyle. If you are determined to continue playing your favourite sport despite a knee injury it will take longer to put right!
I do not commit people to a course of 6 or 10 sessions as that is just not practical. You come for as many or as few treatments as you need until you are happy with how your body is feeling and functioning. Once back to full fitness I often have clients come for a monthly or 6 weekly 'maintenance' session to keep them in good working order.
"Where would we have been without you? Stuck in a queue a mile long in the NHS going nowhere fast probably. We have been so impressed by how quickly you managed to give relief to my husband for his hip problem. We knew there must have been a solution other than surgery, it just took us a while to find it/you. Thank you." J.T. - Bucks |

"Stephen I hope you put this note somewhere lots of people can see it because I want to tell anyone and everyone who has a niggle, pain, ache, discomfort, particularly if they've had it for a long time, not to bother seeing anyone else, just to go straight to you. They will save themselves so much time, energy and money and get far faster results. I can't recommend you highly enough. Thank you for everything you have done for me, I feel like a different person." G.A. - Herts |
